Dear A month. Lucky’s abusers told me no one had fed him for a month. Chained in a filthy backyard, Lucky was forced to watch as his friend, Coco, apparently starved to death just a few feet away. As Lucky grew weaker—so weak he struggled to walk—no one stepped in to help him. When I arrived, Coco’s skeletal remains were still chained in the dirt—and Lucky was barely clinging to life. As he rested his big, weary head in my hands, I knew I could not, would not, leave him there to die. |

My team rescues animals from hideous cruelty all the time: Traumatized victims of backyard breeding operations, kittens born into hoarding nightmares, and dogs like Lucky, reduced to skin and bones by severe neglect. Lucky should have weighed 90-100 pounds. He weighed 57. |

Please, send one of our emergency care packages and help an animal like Lucky: |
We are on call 24/7. We do not stop for holidays, and we are out there in all weather and during emergencies. Your gift today means we can act immediately when animals need us most. PETA secured Lucky’s rescue. We notified law enforcement and took out criminal charges at the magistrate’s office, and we’re pressuring local officials hard to ban dog chaining—a move that would spare many animals from suffering as Lucky and Coco did. Lucky fell asleep as soon as he arrived at PETA’s shelter—likely the first time he’d ever had a warm, safe bed in his life. He gently placed his paw in my hand. I think he was saying, “I trust you.” |
