Elephant Madhuri spent 33 years alone in chains at a temple in Kolhapur, India—isolation so severe it's linked to her killing a priest in 2017 and attacking a bystander in 2022. Last year, she was finally moved to Vantara—a wildlife rescue, care, rehabilitation and conservation initiative in India founded by Anant Ambani—for the specialised, lifelong care she desperately needed. She started healing. She made an elephant friend.

Now she's being sent back.

Madhuri's condition before being moved to Vantara. Her health kept deteriorating with grade 4 arthritis, foot rot, overgrown nails and worn-out footpads from spending a lifetime in chains on concrete.

On September 9, a Supreme Court-mandated committee ordered Madhuri returned to that same temple shed—weeks after its own inspectors called the facility unfit for her long-term care, and after the temple itself admitted the shed exists “purely for religious purpose,” not her rehabilitation.

Here's what makes this so hard to accept: just three months ago, Vantara's own veterinary team put it in writing that Madhuri arrived with “severe chronic podiatric and orthopedic conditions” and “will require continued specialised treatment, supportive care, and periodic monitoring to achieve optimal long-term recovery.” Nothing about her condition has changed. But at the hearing, Vantara, which is owned by Reliance, a company that faced a boycott campaign after they took in Madhuri for care, reversed course and told the Committee her care was no longer its concern.

Madhuri didn't get a say in any of this. You can have one.

Contact Vantara founder Anant Ambani and tell him that an elephant who suffered fractures and arthritis from a life of chains in a shed and ongoing medical and psychological needs should not be ripped from her only elephant friend and sent back to the same shed.
