Dear, She was never given a name. She was called F474. When she arrived at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School (UMass Chan), she was described as shy but friendly. Then the experiments began. Experimenters repeatedly sedated her, cut into her body, and subjected her to surgeries and imaging procedures. Wounds at her incision sites festered. Her front paw bled. And she went hungry. Federal regulations limit the size of dogs who could be kept in UMass Chan’s kennels. According to a whistleblower, dogs were deliberately kept hungry to prevent them from gaining too much weight for those cages. F474’s weight dropped from 36 pounds to just 29 pounds in one month. Her ribs and hip bones became clearly visible. She was not a number. She was someone. And this cruelty came to light only because a whistleblower contacted PETA.

Another dog, F484, was described as friendly and playful. Experimenters cut into an artery to implant a device, leaving her bruised and swollen. She developed fluid-filled sacs at surgical sites and suffered injuries from fighting with other dogs, including lost teeth. Staff described her as “pretty skinny”—yet the experiments continued. These dogs were numbered, confined, cut into, and used.

What PETA Is Doing PETA alerted the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to conditions in the UMass Chan laboratory, but the whistleblower reported that the university killed the dogs before state inspectors arrived. Then UMass Chan acquired four more dogs. The U.S. Department of Agriculture later cited UMass Chan for violations of the Animal Welfare Act after PETA filed a complaint. Federal inspectors found that the university’s animal care committee had failed to adequately review an experiment protocol involving multiple invasive procedures on dogs. Inspectors also cited UMass Chan over careless handling, including an incident in which a dog swallowed a catheter left behind after surgery. PETA ran a full-page ad in the Boston Herald naming experimenter Matt Gounis and calling on UMass Chan to switch to superior, human-relevant research methods. And PETA continues to expose misconduct at the school. The experiments must end.
