Urgent Alert Dear, Elephant Madhuri—also known as Mahadevi—was rescued less than a year ago after 33 years of solitary confinement and suffering. She has severe arthritis, foot rot, multiple fractures, and psychological trauma. At Vantara’s Radhe Krishna Temple Elephant Welfare Trust (RKTEWT) in Gujarat, India—where she was taken by order of the Bombay High Court and Supreme Court—she has finally found peace—and an elephant friend. Now, the temple she was rescued from is trying to imprison her again. Madhuri with foot disease before her rescue. The temple, Nandini Math, which is located in Maharashtra state has submitted an application seeking permission to recall Madhuri from the rehabilitation facility to the same bleak shed at the temple that drove her to kill the chief priest. This would mean breaking Madhuri’s elephant bond and subjecting her to physical and emotional distress—all over again.
