Dear, How long can a frog survive after being skinned alive? For one victim of the frogs’ legs industry, the answer was at least 15 agonizing minutes. After workers cut him open with scissors and ripped off his skin, he tried to escape. Bleeding, mutilated, and fully aware, he crawled along the tabletop—his breath coming in ragged gasps. All around him, other skinless frogs writhed in agony. Hearts beating. Eyes blinking. Many were still conscious—and some screamed—as workers started to dismember them.

PETA Asia investigators went undercover in Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand to expose and stop the global frogs’ legs trade—a dirty business fueled by demand in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. Nothing could have prepared even the most experienced investigators for the horrors they witnessed: Frogs struggled as workers cut, skinned, and hacked them apart. Still alive, many were tossed into piles of other mutilated bodies. One leaped from a pile in a desperate attempt to flee. End their suffering. Workers stuffed terrified frogs into plastic bags filled with ice water. The animals scrambled frantically in an attempt to reach air—but many slowly suffocated for up to 12 hours. Stop this cruelty. After workers at one market cut open frogs’ bodies and put them on display, frogs were seen still breathing—and their exposed hearts were still beating. Shut down this gruesome trade.
