In the early hours of the morning, five people tried to take peaceful action to stop Gazprom drilling in the Arctic. Under cover of night they hopped into boats and made a beeline for Gazprom's rusty oil rig.
Their actions were peaceful, but they were met with extreme force and intimidation from the Russian authorities who pointed guns at the activists and fired warning shots at them.
The protesters are determined to stop Gazprom and will carry on their peaceful protest, but they need your support. Send them a message now:http://bit.ly/187JYbR
This is what it’s like to be on the front line of an action against Arctic oil drilling.
Imagine you're that activist. For a moment, in the middle of the chaos of protesting in the frigid Arctic ocean, you lock eyes with a Russian Coast Guard officer. He is there to stop your peaceful protest, and help ensure the company's operation goes ahead.
You're roughly 60km off the coast of Russia. The ancient oil rig you’re looking at is cobbled together from rusting pieces of other decommissioned rigs. It's been sitting in shipyards for years before being dragged here to drill for oil giant Gazprom, a company with an abysmal history of safety violations and spills. You know that if it goes into production, an oil spill will be all but inevitable.
Two of your fellow activists manage to climb the rig. Frigid water, warning shots echoing around you, the Russian Coast Guard arresting your fellow activists — you're a long way from home.
It's a damn good thing millions of people around the world have your back.http://act.gp/1gwq4YV ‪#‎SaveTheArctic‬
